Ten years and 10 BILLION DOLLARS later, Apple is giving up on its ambitious self-driving electric car, Project Titan.
On February 27, 2024, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, Jeff Williams, together with Kevin Lynch, the Vice President overseeing the automobile project, officially declared the end of the long-anticipated self-driving car initiative.
As per a Bloomberg report, the tech giant has downsized its workforce by 2,000 employees associated with this project. Some will transition to internal projects, while others will move to “Ajax,” Apple’s proprietary large language model (LLM).
Upon investigation, the public widely supports this decision.
The electric vehicle sector is already led by prominent brands such as Tesla, Nissan, Chevrolet, BMW, Audi, Ford, and Hyundai. If Apple were to introduce a subpar, overpriced product lacking innovation, it would simply be another grain in the sandbox.
Frankly, Apple’s decision to step back from this project and acknowledge that the concept of self-driving cars is not yet on the horizon is one of their wisest moves in recent times.
