Today’s Equation
xAI just released the code for its Grok-1 large language model (LLM) on GitHub under an open-source license.
The launch includes the “base model weights and network architecture” of the 314B parameter Grok-1 model.
This move aligns xAI with other AI firms like Meta and Mistral that have released open-source AI models.
With this announcement, Elon Musk had made its promise, but how good is it?
Let’s see if it all adds up.

xai-org/Grok-1
Grok is an AI-powered chatbot built by Elon Musk out of spite (kidding).
Hey, even Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is on the Grok train.
Built-in only under four months, Grok was first announced in November 2023 and powered by the Grok-1 language model. This chatbot was developed to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a project co-founded by Elon in 2015.
Users describe Grok as witty and rebellious, answering “spicy questions” other AIs would avoid.
According to xAI, Grok-1 surpassed other LLMs like ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1 in its “compute class” on tasks like math problems and coding, but was outperformed by models trained on significantly more data like GPT-4.
On top of this, Grok has access to real-time data from X, which xAI claims gives it an advantage over static models like ChatGPT which rely on time-bound data.
One of the many companies that will benefit from this announcement is Perplexity, an AI-powered research tool that’s set to rival Google. According to its CEO Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity will now begin fine-tuning Grok-1 for conversational search and inference optimization.
However, it is important to take note that even xAI acknowledges that Grok can still generate false or contradictory information like other large language models.
Elon Musk and His Open-Source Advocacy
Musk’s decision to open-source Grok is seen as another jab at OpenAI.
After the announcement, Musk wrote “OpenAI is a lie,” criticizing the company for abandoning its original non-profit, open-source mission.
Before making this open-source announcement, it’s important to remember that upon its initial release, Grok was only available to X premium users.
Now, xAI has open-sourced the core Grok-1 language model under an Apache 2.0 license, allowing external development while not providing the training data or live data connections, in line with Musk’s advocacy for open AI models.
With 314B parameters, I wonder about the need for such a scope.
Even Bindu Reddy, CEO of Abacus AI, highlighted that this parameter might be too extensive for the open-source community to leverage.
Nonetheless, the CEO is thrilled that Musk has joined the open-source community.
What’s in it for u⁺
As a new open-source model emerges in the market, we anticipate rapid advancements driven by external user contributions.
For the time being, here are some of the significant advantages we anticipate now that Grok-1 is accessible to the public:
- Increased Transparency and Trust
Open-sourcing Grok-1 would allow the code and model to be publicly audited and scrutinized by the wider AI community and researchers. This transparency can help build trust in the system and identify potential biases or issues. - Fostering Innovation and Collaboration
Making Grok-1 open-source enables developers worldwide to contribute improvements and customizations, and build new applications on top of the model. This can accelerate innovation through collective efforts. - Cost Savings and Accessibility
Open-source AI eliminates licensing fees, reducing costs for businesses and individuals looking to leverage the technology. It democratizes access to advanced AI capabilities, allowing more participants beyond just large tech companies. - Potential for Specialized Applications
With access to the source code, developers could modify and fine-tune Grok-1 for specific use cases across different industries. This customizability enables the building of unique AI solutions tailored to an organization’s particular needs.
However, some challenges of open-sourcing AI models still apply to Grok. These are managing complexity, security risks, lack of quality control over modifications, and potential misuse.
At the end of the day, proper governance and community practices would be needed to mitigate these risks.
